[first light presents: novus]

Following an acclaimed launch party last month, first light returns to Barbecue for the second outing of novus, their new regular audiovisual night. Held in a re-imagined café on Chorlton’s high street, novus sees electronic musicians and visual artists from both Manchester and further afield create new, forward-thinking and immersive sights and sounds that subvert club conventions.

For this second instalment, first light welcomes fast-rising Manchester producer Daniel Ruane for a genre-warping DJ set of leftfield dance, techno and electronica, following live sets from first light resident Wazoo and experimental producer and sound artist Dujat. As ever, the first light DJs will be seeing the night to a close with an eclectic mix of groove-driven electronic music and resident VJ Dee Dixon will be crafting live visuals across the night in reaction to the music played.

Daniel Ruane

Daniel Ruane is a fast-rising producer from Manchester who is pushing the boundaries of electronic music. Taking identifiable tropes from techno and electronica and turning them on their head in a visceral reimagination of genre. His most recent EP, Twitch, was met with critical acclaim and he has since received endorsements from the likes of Mixmag and XLR8R. Ruane's DJ sets have been enthusiastically met by audiences in Berlin, London, Manchester, Liverpool and more and we can't wait to see what he has in store for Barbecue.

Wazoo

London/Glasgow-based producer and first light resident Wazoo crafts intricate, glitched-out and ever-evolving percussive beats informed by his background as a drummer, through which he weaves symphonic lo-fi synth harmonies and warped samples. Fueled by a love of electronic hardware, Wazoo's tracks have an organic character that manages to sit comfortably between genres with nods to everything from ambient to jungle.

Dujat

Dujat is a sound artist and producer born in France, raised in China and now based in Manchester, where he is studying for a PhD at the University of Manchester. Audibly informed by his background in electroacoustic composition and sound art but equally influenced by electronic music of all strains from Jaar-like electronica to experimental hip-hop. Characterised by intricate sound design and expertly arranged layers, Dujat's music defies categorisation.
