Concrète Aberration

2023

Exhibit open 24/03/23 - 07/04/23 at Dai 大 Hall.

Sonic Palette Programme | Residency for AME.

Skate-DIYs  spawn in areas where neglected urban crevices are cultivated into a shared social space. Nourished through fly-tipping* and shaped by pre-existing site characteristics, these DIY's gradually morph into the locations they inhabit. The basic requirements for DIY propagation are: solid floor surface, filler material, access to water & motivated community** This installation looks at three NW-UK DIY's (Beeside, Gooseside, PUMF) and the unique spaces they reside in via warped fisheye-videography & spatial audio.
* the author does not condone fly-tipping, on the contrary DIYs tend to develop clean-up efforts.
** materials can be foraged or brought in, community = 1 or more people.

Beeside DIY

Concrete

Involved in building and skating ‘DIY’s’ over the last few years along with prospecting suitable locations for future ones has led an interest in what makes these spaces flourish.

Developed with support from AME over the months of Jan-March 2023, this installation looks into these spaces and the locations they inhabit. The often hidden nature of DIY’s to avoid closure, along with amenities needed to build or repurpose for skating; create unique skate features that morph within space. Evolving gradually, organically and always ever prone to getting destroyed by landowners/council, there is something special in these community sanctuaries. Existing in a limbo, fitting through the cracks of disused land. Moving away from the many documentaries and video pieces on DYI’s within skate-media, concréte aberration focuses on the edges of these spaces.

Aberration

The visual elements focus on the warped characteristics of fish-eye angles. Particularly drawing from chromatic aberration: a lenses failure to focus all colours to the same point, made more pronounced on the edges of wide-angle fisheye lenses. Accentuating these ‘aberrations’ as a thematic focus of the video and installation through the filming and aligning the bold colour rings to the edges of the circular screen spilling into the installation space.
